Great shave, couple of very minor cons
By Caleb Martiny on October 28, 2015
Bottom line -- you'll get a great, smooth shave, and this has some key improvements over older models. Just be prepared for a few small cons. If you're also looking at the Braun Series 7, I prefer this. However the rotary vs. foil style tends to be a preference/performance point depending on your beard. ===== Long verson -- Smoothest shave I've had, right up there with the cartridge razors I used for 20yrs -- without the nicks and ingrown hairs. I shave daily for work, usually skip the weekends. Coarse, thick hair type. I moved to an electric in 2013 with the Norelco SensoTouch 3D (1290X). Then in late 2014, they redesigned the replacement heads, to universal hatred online. Instead of spending $65 on a poorly rated head replacement (recommended annually), I opted to spend some Christmas money on the Braun Series 7 foil shaver. Been very happy with that over the last year or so. Would have stuck with it, but I received this product as part of a promotion from Philips Norelco. This model 8900 beats both previous razors. Compared to the SensoTouch 3D, the shave is a bit better. They've moved away from the charging stand and let you plug directly into the razor -- a huge win for frequent travelers. The cleaning stand now uses a cartridge instead of refilling a reservoir and they've removed the odd dunking-style contraption from the older version. Still not something I'd take on the road, but much better. The one down side is that they removed the integrated trimmer from the razor itself. Was a nice when I wanted to trim the sideburns or something real quick. Just slide the lever and the trimmer popped out from the body of the razor. It wasn't a strong performer, but it was convenient. With this version, you have to remove the shaver head and replace with the included trimmer head.Read more ›

Good shaver after initial disappointment
By Inna Tysoe on September 21, 2015
My husband has had a couple of Philips Norelco shavers and trimmers in the past and still uses his stubble trimmer regularly because he only shaves 2-3 times a week because he has sensitive skin. Recently he has been using a Remington foil shaver but when the opportunity to try one of the newer Philips Norelco shavers came he jumped at the chance. This shaver is quite nice with an ergonomic shape and comes with a semi-hard travel case for the shave, a beard trimmer head, a three rotary blade Philips head and a Philips smart clean system complete with one cartridge. At first, the shaver looks nice and fits well in the hand but feels very light. It has the one button for on and off and interchangeable heads. It’s suitable for both wet and dry use; the head separates into two pieces fairly easily making it easy to rinse under a tap without any problems. The smart clean system is unusually large. It also operates as a charging station. It has a lengthy cord with a good 5 feet reach is attached to the back for that purpose. This contraction is an antibacterial bath and lubricator for the shaver. A button on the side releases a latch and springs up to allow you to insert the bath/cleaning cartridge which is a consumable that has to be replaced from time to time. The cartridge has a foil top you peel off before sliding it into the system and pushing the body back down to activate the catch. Using it is fairly simple. You insert the shaver, head first, into the form fitting recessed area in the base with the back of the handle facing out. Push down the spring loaded top to lock the shaver in the body. Then an illuminated on/off light displays along with a clean symbol.Read more ›
