Razor vs Razor vs Razor vs Razor

Before I got this newest Panasonic razor, I've been using three other razors for a while now. So the past two days, I've been determining which gives the best shave. The one on the left in the photo is the razor I'm reviewing, the Panasonic ES-RT97-S model. The next one is a comparably priced Philips Norelco Model 7300 Shaver. The next one is a Panasonic ES8103S Arc3 Electric Shaver I purchased in late 2013. And finally there's a 5 blade King of Shaves conventional razor. I shaved each side of my face with different razors two days in a row and asked my wife to tell me which felt like the closest shave feeling my face with her hands. She was in the kitchen when I was shaving, so she had no idea what I did. I went through a complex sequence of comparisons that is best not to bore you with details. Basically, I shaved and re-shaved both sides of my face with different razors and created a process of elimination. I’m a career engineer as you might already have guessed. On the second day, I went through a different sequence – each time asking my wife to independently judge which side of my face had the closest shave by feeling my face. So here is the unbiased results in order of best shave over my two day test. Panasonic ES-RT97-S model (Winner) King of Shaves 5 Blade Shaver (Very Near Tie to Winner) Philips Norelco Model 7300 Shaver (Very Good) Panasonic ES8103S Arc3 Electric Shaver (Quite Good) I admit the blade razor was very nearly the same as the Panasonic ES-RT97-S model, but my wife still insisted the side of my face with the Panasonic ES-RT97-S model got the closest shave. She did not know what razor I used or at what stage of my experiments, so this was absolutely an unbiased test.Read more ›

Waterproof!

This is a good shaver with some great features, but it's not the best one I've used. I've tried two shavers with this kind of head and two with the three circular heads, and I'm convinced that the three circular heads are just better for me; with these, I tend to miss some hairs high up on my upper lip. I can get them, but I have to make an extra effort. What is great about this shaver is the li-ion battery and the ability to use it in the shower or otherwise get a wet shave. That is a very important feature to me. Before I had a shaver with these features, I'd always shave about a half hour after a shower, when the oils are just starting to come back on my skin, but before there are too many (oils). With this, I can shave any time. This and my similarly new Norelco both have the cleaning/charging station. I like having a docking station-type thing, but they're both awkward in the same manner, both being huge and having to put the "lid" down on them. I'm not certain why I need the cleaning aspect of this; perhaps it is just another thing to have to buy periodically. It's always nice having the trimmer, and it is unique in my experience to see one attached like this one, which is very convenient if you don't need to use the comb attachment with it. The comb is fine, but not as convenient because it is not on-board. It doesn't have a travel pouch, which is unfortunate. Overall a good product. I'd definitely try other Panasonic models based on my experience with this one. While it's not perfect for me because of the type of head, I'm guessing some guys prefer this type since so many like it are made. If you like that and the features it offers, you should like this shaver.

This relatively new model from Panasonic give a better shave than most others in its price class, but I doubt I'll be able to persuade rotary blade enthusiasts to the double rectangular foil used here. This is one of the main design differences in electric razors. I've tried both. My personal feeling is that this type cuts closer but may be just a bit rougher on the skin. For me, that was no problem: In fact; some rotaries seem like they glide so smoothly on the skin that they're not able to produce as close a shave. Furthermore, the dual foils aren't rigid; they move up and down like tires following the contours of a road. The PROs: The close shave mentioned above, and the following: It's relatively quiet compared to many others. It charges fast and holds a charge for a longer time than most (although you don't know when it's finished, you'll learn how after the first few). It really is a wet/dry shaver. Go ahead, dunk it, run water over it...just don't drop it in the bathtub (Admittedly, I did not test this for you). It has a solid feel and a certain satisfying "heft" to it, unlike, say, the sleek and shiny Philips Norelco 6100 Shaver that I ultimately got tired of looking at. This has a solid feeling and a classic black and silver color scheme. The head (that part of the device that contains the "foils" moves right and left, as well as up and down, but it still has enough rigidity that you can (comfortably) shave curvy parts of your face and neck closely.Read more ›
